How to Take Care of and Clean Your Jewelry

You've made your first Kléos Jewelry purchase and are so excited to wear your jewelry that you never want to take it off! But how do you keep your Kléos Jewelry looking as shiny and beautiful as when you first got it? Jewelry care practices vary depending on the type of material. To find out what we recommend for each type follow the tips below.

Gold Vermeil Jewelry Care

* Gold Vermeil = Sterling silver gold plated (at minimum 1.0 microns thick).

What you will need: A lint-free cloth, a bowl of water, a mild dish soap, and a polishing cloth (optional).

How to clean: Mix a mild dish soap in water and dip your lint-free cloth in the bowl. Gently use to the cloth to remove any buildup from your jewelry. It's important to avoid harsh rubbing, the use of a jewelry brush or toothbrush as this may cause the silver beneath to become visible. We also strongly suggest that you DO NOT submerge your jewelry in a bowl of water or any acids.*

How to take care: You’ll want to avoid contact with harsh chemicals – (things like perfume, sunscreen, body cream, hair products like hairspray and more). We tend not to think about how our jewelry will interact with products that we use everyday, but they are often one of the most influential in harming the look of your jewelry. We recommend putting your jewelry on after you have gotten ready. It’s also important to avoid wearing your jewelry in the shower, while cleaning, sleeping, washing your hands, swimming (due to the chlorine) and exercising (you'll want to avoid contact with sweat).

How to store your jewelry: If you do not have a jewelry box to store your jewelry in, you can wrap it in a soft-cloth or place it in something airtight. We also suggest storing your jewelry separately to avoid scratches or tangling.

If you follow the recommended jewelry care practices we have outlined above, it is unlikely that the silver base will peak through. If this occurs, your jewelry can easily be re-plated at a jewelry shop near you.

Note: We recommend following the same care practices for stainless steel gold-plated jewelry as you would for vermeil jewelry.

Gold-Filled Jewelry Care

What you will need: A lint-free cloth, a bowl of water, a mild dish soap, and a polishing cloth (optional).

How to clean: Mix a mild dish soap in water and dip your piece of cloth in the bowl. Gently massage your gold-filled jewelry, but do not harshly rub it as this may lead to discolouring. Once dry, use a polishing cloth to finish (optional).

How to take care: Just like gold vermeil jewelry, we strongly suggest putting your gold-filled jewelry on after you have applied lotions, sprays and perfumes. It’s also important to avoid wearing your jewelry in the shower, while cleaning, sleeping, washing your hands, swimming (due to the chlorine) and exercising (you'll want to avoid contact with sweat).

Sterling Silver Jewelry Care

Sterling silver jewelry remains it’s shiniest when worn daily or stored in something air-tight. When silver remains unworn or it is not kept in a box/bag, it will tarnish more quickly as it reacts with oxygen and sulphur.

What you will need: A lint-free cloth, a bowl of water, a mild dish soap, and a polishing cloth (optional).

How to clean: There is more than one method to use when it comes to cleaning your sterling silver jewelry. The simplest way is by using a mild dish soap and water. Simply dip a lint-free cloth into water and gently massage your jewelry. You can finish by using a polishing cloth (optional).

How to take care: Wear your silver jewelry pieces as much as possible, and if not, store them in something airtight. Your natural oils are what keep silver from tarnishing! We strongly suggest putting your silver jewelry on after you have applied lotions, sprays and perfumes. It’s okay to wear your jewelry in the shower once and a while, just avoid harsh chemicals (e.g., purple shampoo). It’s also important to avoid wearing your jewelry while cleaning, sleeping, while swimming (due to the chlorine) and exercising (you'll want to avoid contact with sweat).

How to store your silver jewelry: Ideally in something air-tight like a bag/container or a jewelry box. It’s important to store your pieces individually to avoid scratching or tangling.
